Planning your post COVID-19 travels is the best way to pass the time while staying safely indoors, and Lisbon is one of the destinations that is on our list to travel to next. There is no shortage of history here and truly feels like you have been transported to another time, beautifully tiled buildings line the cobbled stoned streets, but make sure to plan carefully because this city is jam-packed!
One of the first stops would have to be Pastéis de Belém for iconic custard tarts, these cinnamon-dusted tarts are made using an ancient recipe created by monks in 1837. Take time to sample the treats inside the classic blue and white building or while strolling around the Belém neighbourhood.
Belém is also home to a couple of UNESCO sites and historic landmarks that pay tribute to Portugal's seafaring past, like the Discoveries Monument and Tower of Belém, as well as the Jerónimos Monastery. It is easy to tick some of the cities most beautiful sites in one afternoon all while enjoying a delicious treat.
Take a walking tour through Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, Alfama. Walk along the cobblestoned lanes steeped in tradition, see Campo das Cebolas, Casa dos Bicos, the Portas do Sol overlook, and, of course, Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle.
Travel around the city like a local on the iconic Tram 28, the vintage streetcars are painted yellow and are a throwback to another time. Hold on tight as the tram clatters its way through the narrow streets and blares its horn!
Lisbon was the gateway to the new world and there is no place that has the feeling of adventure more than Praça do Comércio. The stunning plaza is surrounded by sunflower yellow buildings acts as a transportation hub with a ferry terminal on one side and trams speeding by on the other. Restaurants around the edge are the perfect spot for a late lunch or dinner while watching the world go by.
