Those travelling Qantas on two key Asian routes are in for a premium experience, as the airline introduces a distinctive Premium Economy seat on its second daily Sydney-Singapore flight and the Sydney-Bangkok route. However, the catch is that this isn’t the usual Premium Economy pod found on the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787; instead, passengers will be stepping onto a Finnair aircraft, featuring Finnair’s all-new Premium Economy recliner.
In a leasing arrangement between the oneworld partners, Qantas will operate Finnair A330s on the Sydney-Singapore route starting October 31, 2023, and on the Sydney-Bangkok route from March 31, 2024. This strategic collaboration addresses an aircraft shortfall for Qantas.
Finnair’s A330 Premium Economy cabin boasts an intimate setting with 21 seats arranged in three rows of a 2-3-2 layout, along with a dedicated washroom. Passengers can expect a comfortable experience with a standout feature being a single-piece ‘waterfall’ legrest. Each seat is equipped with AC and USB power outlets, offering a 38” pitch similar to Qantas’ A380 and 787 Premium Economy seats, providing ample legroom.
While the Finnair Premium Economy seat offers a recline of 8” (compared to Qantas’ 9.5”) and a seat width of 18.7” (slightly narrower than qantas’ 19.5”-21”), passengers can still enjoy a movable 6-way headrest. Qantas will handle catering, inflight entertainment, and ‘soft-product’ elements such as pillows and blankets, while Finnair supplies the aircraft and crew.
Qantas flights featuring Finnair A330s will have unique QF flight numbers, making them easily distinguishable. Commencing October 30, 2023, lookout for QF291 on Sydney-Singapore and QF292 on Singapore-Sydney. Starting March 31, 2024, Qantas’ daily Sydney-Bangkok service will exclusively utilise Finnair A330s under flight numbers QF295 and QF296.
